Insights & Opportunity

The card game proved that hypothetical prompts lower the barrier to real conversation, but that experience was built for people in the same room. The opportunity was to bring that same structured vulnerability into a remote format, so distance would not stop people from connecting in the same honest way.

Process

Designed the room joining flow, including a 6 digit code entry and proximity based room discovery

  • Designed a visual circle showing who is present in each session

  • Structured prompts into tiered levels of depth, easing people from lighter questions into more thoughtful ones

  • Designed multiple response formats, voice, video, and text, so people can answer in whatever way feels natural

  • Designed a shared feed where responses appear together, with reactions and comments for group reflection

  • Currently testing the full experience with a small group of real users

Validation

The app is currently in testing with a small group of real users. Their feedback is actively shaping refinements to pacing, prompt difficulty, and the overall flow.

Interface & Systems

The design includes a tiered prompt system that mirrors the original card game's progression from playful to deep, along with a flexible response system supporting text, voice, and video, and a shared feed for group interaction.

Outcome & Reflection

The app is a working prototype in active testing, not yet a finished or fully validated product. It extends What If's core insight, that structured, judgment free prompts create real connection, into a live remote setting. Real user feedback from this stage will directly shape the next round of design decisions.
