Bellow

A study in form, acoustics, and emotional product design. Named for the bellows-like curve of its enclosure, Bellow explores how industrial design can elevate an everyday product by treating acoustic performance as a design feature, not a hidden function.

Insights & Opportunity

Most consumer speakers optimize for either performance or aesthetics, rarely both. The goal was for the acoustic port — usually an afterthought — to become part of the product's identity. Every decision, from proportion and material to port placement, was made to communicate craftsmanship and performance at once, before a single note plays.

Process

  • Researched acoustics and ported enclosure design

  • Analyzed existing consumer speakers and market positioning

  • Explored form through sketches and iteration

  • Built CAD models to refine proportion and manufacturability

  • Prototyped in MDF using a CNC router to test ergonomics and visual balance

  • Refined CMF direction for a bold, sculptural finish

Validation

Direction was validated through research and competitive analysis — studying acoustic/ported-enclosure principles and how existing consumer speakers position performance versus aesthetics — rather than through formal user testing.

Production & Materials

Prototyped in MDF using a CNC router to test ergonomics and visual balance, with a CMF direction refined for a bold, sculptural finish.

Outcome & Reflection

The final model shows how industrial design can turn a functional object into an intentional one that communicates quality on sight. It reflects a balance of engineering constraints, user experience, and emotional design in a single product.
